Porto is a coastal city in northwest Portugal known for its imposing bridges and port wine production. In Ribeira’s medieval district, on the banks of the river, narrow cobbled streets pass through the merchants’ houses and restaurants. St. Francis Church is known for its lush Baroque interior with ornate golden carvings. The lavish 19th-century Stock Exchange Palace was a stock market and was built to impress potential European investors.
The Clérigos Tower is the traditional baroque bell tower of the Clérigos Church. An old tram follows the river to the seafront bars in the rich Foz region. Up the coast is the fishing port of Matosinhos, where seafood restaurants offer grilled sardines on the street. The 1886 Dom Luís iron bridge has a walkway that crosses the Douro River to the Vila Nova de Gaia Port wine shops. The huge tile panels of São Bento train station depict battles and rural life in Portugal. The famous Lello & Irmão bookstore has ornate art nouveau features, and the Serralves Museum traces the history of contemporary art.
